My bemildredment is small and personal and has to do with the fact that I'm not a poet and I know I'm not a poet. This is the only poem I've written in ages and ages (practically since the Second Punic War), and I doubt--but of course cannot discount the possibility completely--I'll ever write another one.

It is not a complaining bemildredment, mind you. Nor is it a wtf are they thinking? bemildredment. Just ... not what I expected somehow. Life is odd.

These little odd "they liked that? huh?" moments are tiny treasures. Love them, cherish them, make funny stories about them. They often mean that the world likes us for things we never considered about ourselves.

I don't know whether to be pleased or frightened by my reputation. Probably both.

Confession: I had to go to Wikipedia to produce the name of the second bat, which really is just Bothered and not a Kellyesque mangling. And while there, I learned that Bemildred is sometimes merely Bewildered -- which factoid I'd clearly edited from memory as ... just too normal. There's no normal in Fort Mudge. That'd ruin the jokes.

I understand your bemildredment. As another non-poet I felt something similar when my cat haiku was chosen to be included in a creative writing book with selected readings. Life is indeed odd.
