My brain persists in misreading Glastalvon as Galveston, making me wonder whether this is a Sean Stewart or Steve Gould kind of story -- and then I take another look and go "Oh."

I suspect that if you had cooperative characters it's likely they'd have wandered in from someone else's book.

In this case, it may be because the political situation is so bad it's making them think a review of eschatological theories may be in order Just In Case. Then again, it may be like Magical Realism: We'll talk about this, because it's ever so much safer than talking about politics, because that could get us killed. Of course, it could be that they've sussed out your recent efforts to sort things, and are Getting Even, because they're contrary bastards.
