truepenny: artist's rendering of Sidneyia inexpectans (writing: melusine (Judy York))

Please remember, I'm finishing the third book about Felix and Mildmay right now and plotting the fourth--which I've had in my head since 1998 or so. I already know what's going to happen to these characters, the ways in which they're going to change--and the ways in which they're not.

So while I fully support people talking about my books and analyzing and speculating, my personal blog is not the right forum. Because I can't join in the conversation. (Well, I can say, "Yes, you're right!" and "No, you're wrong!" but that kills conversation rather than encouraging it.) And because it makes me very uncomfortable.

Also, please understand that there are legal issues here. Terry Pratchett's example is one that all authors are painfully aware of, and the internet being what it is, I cannot afford to trust that none of you would behave in that fashion. And I'm sorry for that.

I am flattered and delighted by how carefully y'all are thinking about my characters, and I don't in any way, shape, or form want to shut down discussion. But I am going to ask that you not have that discussion here.

[livejournal.com profile] cassandraterra has started [livejournal.com profile] the_mirador. Which I do not and will not read. So, please, if you want to talk about my books, take the conversation over there.

He had to stop participating in alt.fan.pratchett for exactly the reasons you would expect, given the context here.

Fortunately, it seems that this story has come to a happyish conclusion. At least as of the January 2006 update of the FAQ, he is posting there again.

I apologize for my own contributions to your distress over this.

Your children are just too intriguing.

I'm curious about the Terry Pratchett example too, as I had never heard that he had any problems with fans/speculation/copyright.
Marion Zimmer Bradley, yes, I have heard about her horrible tale, but.... not Pratchett.

Other than that, I will just say thank you for such wonderful characters and since I don't speculate much, I'll continue to enjoy your writing craft posts as well.

So sorry. I didn't know. I will bite my tounge in the future.

Sorry you were having problems!

I just wanted to tell you that I got The Virtu from my library (I'm out of work, or I would have bought it, alas) and read it in a gulp, then re-read Melusine and read it again! This resulted in my dreaming about labyrinths for hours last night. EEEEE!
