These chapters keep splitting like amoebas.

Chapter Six is done, at 9,031 words, because half of it is now Chapter Seven. If a chapter is a convenient chunk of narrative, then no matter how you define "convenient," once you get over seventy pages, it just isn't.

I can't tell whether the spurious feeling of accomplishment is more encouraging than the knowledge that it's spurious is depressing.

I am currently mourning my prologue. It got wordy and began taking over the novel. I am in dep sympathy with you over the whole spurious bit, because I feel better about the book with the prologue cut, but now its ten pages shorter. As it's only 85 pages right now, that was a significant chunk of the work.

Sigh. Back to the salt mines.

I would concentrate on the joy engendered by the use of the word "spurious" which, like haphazard or halibut or eclectic, or phrases like "brass monkey's" and "hoist by his own petard", is just generally an enjoyable word to say, and one that's mor pleasing the more one says it.

I think novels are so long and such a slog that anything that feels like a useful milestone should be embraced enthusiastically.
