Today is better than yesterday.

One of the most valuable things I learned in graduate school is to be easily pleased and easily amused. There's no moral superiority in being dour and joyless, and it certainly doesn't make anybody's life better.

So, yeah. I got words today. I'm happy.

Amen dat.

There's also no point in being cool, except for its own sake. *g* Occasionally, the mainstream has things to offer.

Weird.

Oh, would that this meme would spread!

And yes, this time I got your e-mail and have responded.

My mom shooed me out of the guest room to write while she finished the second coat of paint. So I got words, too, and am likewise happy.

It's also *much* less fun.

Did it help? I'm very easily pleased and amused and it would be nice to think that might be an advantage in grad school.

From my wife's Ph.D. experience, I can say that it does help. A lot. So does silly. Silly is priceless.

Wow I didn't take that 'Don't be Dour 101" class in graduate school. I learned to always let moose have the right of way, how to pour beer correctly, and how to teach composition while holding an orphaned sled dog puppy in one arm.

You know, I very rarely seem to learn what is being taught, though.

This was the learning from experience part. The things I was formally taught were much less useful.

exercises in masochism

I think that may be one of the most valuable things that i have read all week. Now if only my grandmother would learn it and take it to heart instead of holding every little hurt dear. It is so hard to see it because it makes her miserable, and that makes my family sad. She seems to take a sort of masochistic pleasure in the whole thing. I don't know, but I truly think that if adults took afternoon naps they'd be much happier.
