Locus is underwhelmed (review not online): "While The Mirador is about the same length as The Virtu, it moves more slowly because of this determined emphasis on interior lives and personal demons, with the larger scenario only coming into focus very late in the game. . . . in their third adventure, Felix and Mildmay didn't learn Imriel's lesson [i.e. Kushiel's Justice, the review just prior]--they spend a little too much time navel-gazing before the real action can begin."

Gavin Grant, over at BookPage (scroll down), is sort of moderately whelmed.

Poodlerat likes it, though.

Riiiiiight. Because nobody could possibly be at all interested in Mildmay's interior life.

Not Mildmay's obsession! *grumble* Stupid reviewers - get it right!

I loved it. Loved. And then I wailed about the wait for not-Summerdown.

And just what is WRONG with dealing with personal demons?! I love it so far! I'm just so wrapped up in Felix and Mildmay's inner thoughts that I think I've been lulled into a false sense of security. Now I cam scared to think of what will come next!

Well, it's nice of the Locus reviewer to assure me that I'll love the book, but it wasn't really necessary in this instance.

Oh, I love that BookPage called Felix, "an agent of chaos!"

Having finished Kushiel's Justice fairly recently (and I loved the crap out of it), the Locus review just motivated me to go check Barnes and Noble again. They had the paperback of The Virtu yesterday, but not The Mirador.

You're welcome. I was pleased I didn't have to move it there. =>

The workings and astute development of the characters in the series is what draws me in most, so I have no qualms with characterization taking a stronger focus. I had an English professor who always emphasized that a character's true nature is shown most clearly in situations of conflict and strife-facing one's inner demons, for example-and I firmly believe that sentiment. I wouldn't be so invested in the plot if there weren't such strong characters for it to revolve around. If someone wants to be underwhelmed because the focus shifts a little more toward defining those characters, that's their loss.

WTF?????

I mean, Mildmay alternates navel-gazing with action pieces that would do a Hammett or Chandler protagonist proud, if it didn't send them into the nearest bar for a drink, or several.

I was able to find a copy at the big local Borders on Saturday, and read it last night.

When did you say The Book Formerly Known as Summerdown was coming out? ;)

I have to admit, I have this thing with your books now where I have to check the end first just so I can prepare myself for how much hurting there will probably be.

I can't wait for the next one!!! Felix is just so wonderfully and wittily sarcastic as usual, he makes me go all giggly. :) Great job!!!
