Today's tally
Proj2.2: 568 words.
Proj4.1: 200 words.
Total: 768
Verdict: Passable. Barely.
And you're stopping because ... ? Headache.

Working on vol.2 and vol.4 at the same time isn't as insane as it sounds (at least not quite). Vol.4 introduces a new narrator in a new setting, and we've got lots and lots of stuff to work out before my sequence protagonists erupt upon the scene. Today's work done actually includes a bunch of backgrounding-type stuff, including making a long list of names for future reference.

Am also having uneasy thoughts about whether this four-book sequence [ought|oughn't] to be a five-book sequence.

Nei l Gaiman posted in his journal last September:

(When writing a novel that's pretty much entirely what life turns into: "House burned down. Car stolen. Cat exploded. Did 1500 easy words, so all in all it was a pretty good day." "Got call this morning to say I'd got Nobel Prize for literature. Wrote less than 300 words (285) probably unusable, so lousy day." And so forth.)

Since then it's become a standard benchmark for writers in these parts. "Hey, Kit, how's it going?" "Exploded cat!" "Oh, good!"

Good luck soldiering onward...

Thanks! Both for the encouragement and for reminding me of that fabulous quote.
