Canada has been planning a military port for it, and one entrepreneur bought up a frozen Canadian commercial port with an eye toward that passage opening up.

I wonder what a military port will do to such a fragile place. Ironically, at least part of the tug-of-war for Arctic sovereignty is about oil, which is responsible for most of the problems in the first place. The sad thing is that maybe the port is something that has to happen. The North is Canadian, after all (and wonder of wonders, I'm actually agreeing with Stephen Harper. The situation must be desperate).[/political rant]
