Waterlog

TIME: 50 min.
DISTANCE: 6 mi.
TOTAL DISTANCE: 109.9 mi.
DISTRACTION: "The Quadripartite Affair" (MfU 1.3)
NOTES: Is it just me, or does everyone want to drown Jill Ireland in a bucket?
SHIRE-RECKONING: still lost in the Barrow-downs

A question for those familiar with the history and geography of New York: in 1964, when the Man from U.N.C.L.E. intro says that the tailor shop entrance to HQS is in the east Forties, what is that signaling, if anything, about the neighborhood?

It's a relatively nondescript portion of Midtown East, I think.

A little north of what then would have been the happening part of the Lower East Side, which is now the East Village.

Cool.

Also, why did it take me this long to realize that that intro is spoofing newsreels?

distracted by David's hair?

Actually, I think I was too busy cringing at the violation of the fourth wall.

(Although there's one shot in there where his jawbone shows itself and you can suddenly see Steel instead of Illya.

(Damn. I have no icons of beautiful middle-aged David McCallum.)

It is midtown east, but they might be referring to Turtle Bay specifically, which has been the site of the UN headquarters since the late 1940s/early 1950s. I don't know if that makes any difference with regard to the show, though.
