When you are talking about the Nazi occupation of, say, Poland, it is not correct to refer to the "German occupants."

(The book I am reading right now (Unanswered Questions: Nazi Germany and the Genocide of the Jews, ed. François Furet, [L'allemagne nazie et le génocide juif, 1985] NY: Schocken Books, 1989) is a mixed bag as far as the content goes, but the editing is lousy and the translation (from the original French publication) is sometimes, as above, distinctly wonky.)

Sounds interesting. What's the reason, if any, behind the reading material?

I'm hoping that eventually my brain will let me know.

Fair enough. I was just curious since I am a Holocaust historian.
Haven't read that particular work though.

If that sounded flip, I apologize. I don't know why I'm reading about the Nazis and the Holocaust. I assume my backbrain is working on something and it will eventually let me know what. In the meantime, it's both horrifying and fascinating, and post-Ph.D., I've learned to be grateful for books I want to read, even when my own motivations baffle me.

Not at all. As the one who studies it I far too often sound flip, so I'd be the last one to condem you ;)
That's fair enough. I'd recc 'The Drowned and the Saved' by Primo Levi is you want a good eyewitness account. Borowski's 'This Way to the Gas Ladies and Gentlemen' is also amazing for the sheer 'oh god no' factor.
