I need to brag share good news.

I got the first royalty statement for The Bone Key today. In its first year out in the big wide world, it sold out its advance approximately six times over. It is totally the Little Book That Could.

And so that this entry is not entirely me me me me me, if you have not already, I highly recommend you read Elizabeth Bear's short story, "Sonny Liston Takes the Fall."

(I have been listening obsessively to the Mark Knopfler song, "Song for Sonny Liston,"

for three days now, and evince no signs of stopping soon.* Which is why, in my head, there's a segue in this post where in actual fact there isn't.)

---
*This is how I got about Cry Cry Cry's version of "Cold Missouri Waters"

when I was finishing Corambis.

What exactly it is about either of them, I do not know. It's not just the earworminess--otherwise, I'd do this with a lot more songs.

ETA: discursive footnote inside a discursive parenthesis--feeling convoluted today, are we?

We took our copy on holiday to Australia with us and I lent it to the woman sat next to me on one flight who had run out of things to read! She read the first story and enjoyed it, so let's hope she goes out and buys herself a copy.

Practically the first thing I did when I reached San Francisco in the autumn of 07 was to find a bookshop and look for it - and found it!

I also have to recommend "Sonny Liston Takes the Fall." It's one of Bear's best, and that's saying a lot.

It's a book that totally deserves to succeed. I found it in all ways wonderful, and I'm rarely a fan of short stories. Congrats!

For the Bone Keyt: WOOOT! It is a fabulous collection.

Cold Missouri Waters is one of my favourite James Keelaghan songs. (Although the studio version loses a little). That's a very lovely cover.

And Knopfler is always good for an earworm or five.

As everyone else has said, that is awesome and well-deserved. The Bone Key is a great book that gets better every time I read it (and I've read it several times over the last year, thanks only in part to writing a column on it). I suggest it to pretty much everyone all the time, though I don't know how much my doing that has actually contributed to its success.
