Enthusiastic (somewhat spoilery) review of Corambis at Fantasy Book Critic. Interestingly, this reviewer feels that Corambis does work as a standalone novel, so clearly YMMV on that issue.
I can't particularly imagine trying to read "Corambis" as a stand alone because I never, ever, ever just pick up a book in a series out of order. Partially because I want to grow with the characters, come to love them as they develop, etc. I don't want to miss anything. And I read so fast it's not like it'll hurt me to take a few days out to read the first few books first.
Digressing: I suppose it's more stand-alone than, say, "The Virtu." If I had to compare. There are still so many referential plot points though (the rubies, etc) that I think it would be a bit difficult to read on its own. Of course, I don't view this at all as a negative. I'm unbelievably sad that my time with Felix & Mildmay is over, at the same time as happy, because I absolutely loved "Corambis." It was a great end to a great series.
I got my copy before work this evening. I ordered it from B&N and our local store wasn't planning to carry either it or Bear's new book, but I think I have convinced them to get at least one or two copies to "see what happens." It makes me crazy...B&N and Borders need to be swamped with requests for your books so they will actually consider what people want!!!
You ruined me for work today. I picked up my copy last night, burned midnight oil, etc, thought about it all through boring meetings, and ducked out early so I could get back to it. Your series is one of the most emotionally compelling things I've read in years, in fact. As a bookseller I can understand the difficulties with fantasy series all too well... but I'm doing my level best to hand-sell yours. Because honestly I can only hand-sell things I really love.
Thank you for writing Corambis, thank you, thank you. It´s a wonderfully satisfying read, and so many ideas to fuel my mind with. Actually, some parts of the process in which Felix is healing is something I very much recognise in myself. So, this series is finished, I´ve read them all, and I can´t but wonder...is it really finished? Will you ever, ever dwell on their lives again? You know, after I closed the book I was wondering also...will you write a book by assuming for instance, the name of one of the wizards whose books are mentioned in this series? I could imagine we would very much like a dissertation on Thaumatology, and even if it´s not real, it´s all food for thought. But again, congrats, and all the best of luck securing a publisher! I am getting ready to read Corambis. However, I must say that it has been awhile since I read the first 3 novels...and I have (unfortunately!) forgotten the details of the plot. Is there somewhere on the web you recommend I go for a quick summary? I just need to get back up to speed. Thanks for your help!
