Visual aids: Mildmay the Fox

[livejournal.com profile] matociquala very kindly distracted me from my book by sending me this link, to which I said, "Holy shit that's amazing." And then said, "You know, this Ivan Zubkevich, he looks a lot like Mildmay." Check out that upper body musculature.

So, you know, if you're trying to visualize Mildmay, here's a good starter. Also, seriously? Holy shit that's amazing.

Awesome.

Stuff like this makes me feel like I am squandering the privilege of having a body.

Must...learn...back-flipping...

Oooh, that's awesome.

I once came upon a guy online that looked nearly exactly like one of my antagonists except he had black hair. It was weird.

[identity profile] saltypepper.livejournal.com 2009-10-20 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I bet that guy would make an awesome cat burglar! ;)

This is not helping one single bit with my massive crush on Mildmay, either.

[identity profile] pixel39.livejournal.com 2009-10-20 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You either, huh?

[identity profile] lyonesse.livejournal.com 2009-10-20 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
holy shit indeed. straps work is HARD.

that said, i'm surprised that level of upper body strength didn't allow mildmay to compensate a bit better for his leg injuries.

[identity profile] truepenny.livejournal.com 2009-10-20 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, two answers:
1. By the time Mildmay's leg is crippled, he's at least a year out of conditioning and has walked across Kekropia with insufficient calorie intake to boot. So he's not in the kind of shape he was in at the beginning of Mélusine, and then with the being bed-ridden after the injury. Plus, no physiotherapists in space at this level of medical knowledge/tech and not terrifically good care, either.

2. Hindsight is 20/20.

[identity profile] truepenny.livejournal.com 2009-10-20 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Or, alternatively, how do we know his upper body strength isn't helping him compensate? We don't know--because I was very careful not to specify--exactly what happened to his leg, or how bad it really was.

[identity profile] matociquala.livejournal.com 2009-10-20 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, he can still climb buildings with a crippled leg. I'd say that's pretty decent compensation.

[identity profile] renatus.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I was thinking. How is being able to still climb builings not compensating well? Lots of able-bodied people can't climb buildings!

[identity profile] lyonesse.livejournal.com 2009-10-20 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
er. i do not want to argue with you about your writing, about which you are obviously entirely authoritative, having made it up. but someone who can do straps like that fellow can, i think, walk on his hands with about as much fuss as i walk on my feet. that was a *really* impressive vid.

[identity profile] truepenny.livejournal.com 2009-10-20 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
If you'll notice, I didn't say Mildmay could do the things Ivan Zubkevich can do.

[identity profile] truepenny.livejournal.com 2009-10-20 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Then I apologize. I seem to have missed your point somewhere.

Holy shit about covers it....

My reaction was more "holy fuck".

This is why I think writing is more like the circus than the Olympics: I have no doubts that that fella could pull off a standard Olympic floor ex or rings routine very well. But instead he's doing the coolest stuff he can think of. "I will make this as awesome as possible" beats "I will make this as likely to win an award as possible" every time.

[identity profile] truepenny.livejournal.com 2009-10-20 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh. I like this point. It is shiny.

[identity profile] frostedelves.livejournal.com 2009-10-20 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Wowdamn. Cool, thanks for sharing the sharing.

[identity profile] lady-tigerfish.livejournal.com 2009-10-20 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
There is only one thing this can mean:

...You must write an alternate-universe story wherein Mildmay joins the circus.

(Also that is EXTREMELY impressive.)

I saw a picture of a male model a few weeks ago that just shouted "Felix" but couldn't find his name. Argh. (It was the hair, really.)

[identity profile] topknot.livejournal.com 2009-10-21 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
i do sooooo love having active visual cues to help out with a damned good story. Randomly, that video reminds me so much of something that was shared with me the other day.

I said the same thing you did!! And that is pretty much how I pictured Mildmay, except with longer hair.

[identity profile] marykaykare.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Longer hair and *red* hair, right?

Yes, my reaction was also "holy fuck!" First when he rolls up the belt and then again when he does that curving the legs over to the right while balanced on one hand.

I've seen Baryshnikov do some pretty amazing things with his body too. And I'm so shallow. I keep wondering what it would be like to make love to someone with that much muscular strength and control.
