Another Q&A session.
One of the questions is a spoiler for the end of Corambis, so I'm going to stick it behind a cut-tag.
Q:Why did you decide to have Felix and Mildmay live in a lighthouse? Lighthouses are quite famous for stairs, and Mildmay is quite famous for his trouble with stairs.
A: Actually, the lighthouse of Grimglass is part of the Warden's castle, so there's no reason Felix's post as lighthouse-keeper would mean that Mildmay has to live at the top of the tower. I don't know exactly what their domestic arrangements are going to be, but Mildmay isn't going to have to climb any stairs he doesn't want to.
As for "why a lighthouse?"--I've always known there was a magical lighthouse on the west coast of Corambis. I knew that before I knew Corambis was in the same world as Mélusine. And once there's a magical lighthouse, a girl's got to do something with it.

Date: 2009-11-08 10:23 pm (UTC)Thanks for the explanation! I remember finishing up Corambis, and about half a page from the end I suddenly got this strange picture of Mildmay being very disgruntled about having to live in house with a ton of stairs. But you cleared that up very nicely!

From what I can see, *industrial* lifts predate passenger locomotives in our history. Passenger lifts were a novelty for the rich as locomotive prototypes were being built.
About fifty years later, passenger lifts and railways were both commercially available.
Being associated with a castle/nobility would make a pneumatic lift even more likely.
