My inter-season episode, "On Faith," is live at Shadow Unit. It's a standalone story, so if you've been wanting to check out Shadow Unit, it might be a good place to start. And if you're already reading Shadow Unit, well, I hope you like it.
I liked this one very much -- the Todd/Reyes relationship in the early days, the bits of origin thinking, the 1960s FBI agents, and the strange family of faith healers (somewhat redacted to avoid spoilers for the hyper-sensitive; which is probably enough to give away what I didn't say). Very good all around.
I don't know whether you're also responsible for the easter egg, but Solomon Todd's faithful, continual, ruthless kindness to a man who's been aching to kill him since the day they met is one of my favourite things in the history of this show. It helps me to understand a lot better what it means that he thinks of himself as the executioner.
I've only just had family-free time to sit down and read this.
Excellent! I deeply appreciate the way you wove tenderness into each of them -- Reyes, Todd, Demmer, and Stone -- in all the different ways tenderness can work.
Oh God Oh God Oh God I can't believe I've forgotten how much I love your writing style. One of the things I love about it is the very creative swears people come up with (Mildmay, Septimus, now Marmaduke). Just....love.
Also, was it just my fangirl goggles, or did you put in subtle subtext between Stone and Demmer? I mean, I know the story itself justifies why they live together, but...I had to wonder, with the hair-touchy and the little scene where Demmer decides to give him a nickname. It really could just be my fangirl goggles seeing what they want to, but I had to ask.
Of course, nothing remotely smart or scholarly about that comment... I did love the slow reveal of the murderer suspect being Edgar and not Clemson, the characterization of both of them--hell, the characterization of the old doctor. Sol and his snark <3. There's a snappy wit and an intelligence I've always adored in your work, and it comes out here as well.
Let's just say I sat down wanting to read Act I before going on to other things, and then ending up reading all five.

And even into Clemson and Edgar. Poor souls.
