You're really good at this writing stuff, you know. (Sorry about the continuing saga that brought to the hospital. They really gave you a pager? That sounds suitably surreal in its own right.)
(And, yes, it was exactly the same sort of pager one gets at, for instance, Outback Steakhouse. I can see the advantage, as it means the technicians do not have to hunt all over the extensive and tastefully warren-like waiting room, but, yeah. Surreal is a good word.)
(And I suppose it helps with HIPAA concerns, because a system of code words and countersigns in place of calling out real names, while appealing to my inner spy, would probably be a considerably less elegant solution and more taxing on people who just want to feel better.)
In totally unrelated news, I reread Corambis again today, and wanted to thank you for writing it. It's one of the few books I've read that as soon as I was done I started over again at the beginning, over and over and over again with the hardback until I finally made a friend borrow it, and I suspect it will be true of the paperback as well, except that that fits in my purse, so moreso.
It's so much a comforting beautiful scary book, and I love it. And thought you might want to know.
I guess it is a sad fact that hospitals are one of those places where you can be within ten feet of a person at all times and still be completely alone and unable to get help.
The last time I saw an 'urban' telling of the story was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jin-Roh
I had sorta mixed feelings about it, mostly due to the massive gender imbalance. But the idea of the wolf doing things he himself found monstrous in order to protect his pack and his place in it was interesting.
