I'm following Neil Gaiman and [livejournal.com profile] elisem and linking to Teresa Nielsen Hayden's elegy.

Because I can't put it better than she does.

This must be what it felt like to hear that the Library of Alexandria had been burned.

Oh God. I have no words to describe this loss. People may shrug and say "hey, it's not like someone died", but this is about humanity, about our cultural heritage ripped away and gone for good. What a consequence of ignorance and barbary on both sides-- history and science crushed under the heels of stupid men.

Someone did die. Long, long ago. And we've kicked over their grave, and we'll never, never get their memory back. Their name has been lost when it could have sung down thousands more years to our own descendants.
