While Project Valkyrie has not stopped, I did, several months ago, quit using the rowing machine--for a variety of reasons, all of which were problems with me, not problems with it. I've been using the EA Active Sports program for the Wii as my regular exercise, plus a dressage lesson once a week (and if you think that's not exercise, I have news for you) and walks with [livejournal.com profile] mirrorthaw on the weekends and mucking around in the yard, etc. etc. But nothing that could take over for the metrics. Which is important only insofar as it gives me some tangible measure of progress to fixate on.

But today, finally, I started swimming laps. The pool is 25 yards long, so each lap is 50 yards. I did 20 laps in approximately an hour (mostly breast-stroke, with five or six half laps of freestyle). 1000 yards (1760 yards in a mile), which is .56 miles.

So imagine that the rowboat sank at 275.6 miles, which is where I stopped using the rowing machine; I shall be swimming the rest of the way. Progress will be very slow.

LAPS: 20
YARDS: 1,000
MILES: .56
TOTAL MILES: 276.16

I ran into that problem a few years ago, when I set an annual target for distance rowed but wanted to include some bike rides and a few hikes. Someone needs to come up with a comversion factor! (For me, at least, rowing 1 km is probably close in effort to swimming 100m.)

Wife makes gentle fun of my measuring bike mileage out to .01, but metrics help with goals.

Yay, swimming! (I got so totally hooked on it this spring.)

I was finding distance sort of distressing (because it takes so much longer to swim it than to walk it), so currently, I'm tracking lengths per time, and watching my speed increase, which makes me happy. I have spreadsheets and charts and all sorts of fun things.

I also play games with myself by rotating stroke (I usually do patterns of three, which I find very satisfying) and once or twice a session going all out in crawl (much faster, but I can't sustain it yet) for a lap.

Oh the numerology. *g*

My goals are strength and endurance, so the scale issues don't bother me. But I was very pleased with myself today (Thursday) for pushing from 20 laps to 28.

This is completely unrelated to your actual post but i seem to recall you saying you adored the old 'Man From U.N.C.L.E.' series. i discovered via IMDB.com that they are doing a remake of some sort. There was very little information as of this morning but i will be following the updates as they become available.

Non-horse people never really get how much work riding really is. It's like doing yoga or martial arts on top of a 1,000 lbs. animal, that's moving. I hope you are loving your dressage lessons - once I found dressage I've never looked back although, if I were younger and fearless I wouldn't mind trying a little jumping.

Yes, I am loving dressage a lot. Thank you!

Apropos of nothing in particular, thank you for this blog. I visit it often. I started reading it because I already knew you were a terrific author, and I've stayed with it because you're a kind and interesting person. Just wanted to pipe up with this, as I feel I sometimes (too often) take things of value for granted. Shouldn't do that.

And some of your icons are just fantastic, too.
