truepenny: artist's rendering of Sidneyia inexpectans (horse: fd)

This is one of the reasons I'm looking for a part-time job:

His name is Franco Donatello*; he's a 15.3 hand, five-year-old, chestnut Holsteiner gelding, and as of this afternoon, he is mine.

You can see that he celebrated with mud:

Also, that I take crap photographs. The best one I got was one of him modeling his fly-mask:

Which mostly shows you how weird fly-masks look.

I am undoubtedly insane for buying this horse, but there are a lot of things that I have wanted to do and not done because they were too expensive or I didn't have the time or I didn't have anyone to do them with, and I know what those regrets feel like. With dressage and horses, I'm taking the other approach, of going ahead and trying, even though I'm not sure it's going to work. Because this is something I really want to do, and this young, sweet goofball of a horse seems like he's going to be a good partner to do it with.

*His current use-name is Donny; for a variety of personal reasons, I wish to change it, and suggestions are welcome, although of course I reserve the right not to use any of them.

You should name him "Sun Dagger" for the following reasons. 1) The star and stripe facial marking on the horses face closely resembles many of the ancient Anasazi sun daggers that are found in the desert southwest. These sun daggers were often petroglyphs etched into rock and purposefully placed to mark times of solstice, usually the summer solstice. 2) The time of your purchase was *almost* on the summer solstice (June 21, 2010); so you could modify a little and say his purchase date was on June 21 :)

Or you could name him after some of the horses my family used to own in the past: Prince, Robin, Snip (because the horse like to bite), Lucky, Thunder (a nice bay colt), Lightning (a high spirited horse), Spoon, Nit.

Have fun!

Your horse is lovely! I am deeply envious. Though, really, I'll probably have to wait years before I achieve my own status as horse-owner as well. It's been way too long, though. I ought to at least see about lessons in my area.....

I'm throwing my vote in for Sun Dagger because that's a freaking awesome name and reason for it. Plus Dagger, Dag, or Sunny are all awesome nicknames.
