My tomato plants are "making"

So it looks as if I will have yellow, purple and red heirloom varieties. We already have a ton of cherry tomatoes coming along, in three types, all of them astonishingly big. It seems to be a good year for tomatoes in St. Louis, despite the heat. Our Italian zucchini also look to be heavy bearers as well, so we intend to pick the fruits as small as possible, so that we don't end up with Giant Zucchinis from Hell.

I came up with a recipe for an alcohol-free Mai Tai that doesn’t trigger my wife’s pineapple allergies. (And the brain freeze from drinking them too fast suppresses her migraines.)

Have put part of the middle back into the novel!

Also, tomatoes are ripening in the garden. And I found a volunteer squash plant in the yard and moved it to live with the giant squash plant that is blooming but not making fruit.

Our eggplant is in bloom, which sounds to me like spy code. "The eggplant is in bloom." I wrote it on an old college friend's FB wall because it was so spy-y.

You ain't got no kind of feeling inside
I got something that will sure 'nuff set your stuff on fire
You refuse to put anything before your pride
I got something that will knock all your pride aside

CHORUS:
Tell me something good (tell me, tell me, tell me)
Tell me that you love me
Tell me something good (tell me, tell me, tell me)
Tell me that you like it, yeah

Got no time is what you're known to say
I'll make you wish there were 48 hours to each day
Problem is you ain't been loved like you should
What I got to give will sure 'nuff do you good

CHORUS

(Sorry, I felt like being literal and lyrical. :> )

I leave near a branch of the Chicago River and discovered a tiny wooden bridge crossing it, just about a block and a half from my house. It's one of my new favorite places to walk to, and I have a phobia about crossing bridges, but this one is so cute and awesome that I'm overcoming it (for this particular bridge). I knew of a larger bridge that has a road across it, but this one is solely for pedestrians and will be ideal for games of pooh sticks.

Also discovered a public pool near by and have cobbled together a calendar of all the free museum days in Chicago. Productive!

Not to make this a largely tomato-based comment thread, but I bought ingredients! At a farmer's market! To make tomato-basil-mozzarella salad. If you hear a large "bang" from the direction of Boston, it's just the universe imploding because I'm going to cook something.

Also, penguins holding flippers!

My cat has finally given up her addiction to the tissue paper that came in a birthday present. From the first part of June, so you can imagine the rags it is in.

Of course now she's become obsessed with the Orchard Supply bag that the finch food came in.

One day at a time.

So last fall I fought an accounting course and the course won, to the tune of a final grade of 40%. This spring I fought a macroeconomics research paper and the paper won, to the tune of failing that course. This summer I had a rematch with both courses and I'm winning, to the tune of as long as I put my name on the final exam papers I pass both courses. And at this institution, failing a course and retaking it and passing it means the failing grade goes away. So my GPA gets recalculated with two courses going from 0 points to 4, which will have a dramatic positive effect.

I thought the opening sentence for The Thirdhop Scarp was so awesome I made it my gchat status for yesterday (with proper attribution, but of course). About an hour my boss sent me a message asking if it was a real place. I told him to google it. No report back on what he found yet, but if you get a very confused comment asking where your pub is located, say hi to him for me :D.

I am exceedingly happy right now about my upcoming trip to Montreal; I had already been looking forward to the opportunity to see a whole lot of wonderful smart people at [livejournal.com profile] farthingparty, and now it is even better in multiple ways. (I have interesting conversational company for the drive up and back, and relaxing touch company for the time I am there.)

I had a wonderful birthday party at Readercon, to go with the wonderful birthday party at Fourth Street (and I was ever so pleased that you could be there for the latter).

There may be some good follow-on consequences of Readercon. That's still uncertain, but new information received today is positive....

Though I had given up hope, the ebook vendor that most of my purchases over the past decade have been made through finally released an iPad-native version of their reader software. I spent a while last night loading my entire collection into it.

Work continues well.

I continue to have some of the best friends a blue shark could possibly have.

My cat is currently asleep in a cardboard box in a nest of bubble wrap. Every time he shifts, I wait with bated breath for a bubble to pop and his nap to be spoiled, but it hasn't happened yet. So he's sleeping blissfully on, with his little paws tucked up under his chin and a tiny purr bubbling out every time he exhales.

I am, at this very moment, digitizing the last tape of a box of 50 or so live music tapes that a friend asked me to do. It's a concert of Menton & Martz first, and then the Flash Girls.

This project has been dragging on for almost two years, mostly due to my dilatoriness, so I will be very glad to have completed it.

This morning I harvested green beans and raspberries from the garden to go with leftovers of the terrific Greek chicken/phyllo pie that I made this weekend. And a few of the tomatoes are almost ripe!

Leverage and Lost are continuing to entertain me.

I woke up this morning surrounded by sleepy purring cats. And earlier today, the princess allowed Toby to touch noses with her and then follow her around, purring his fool head off the whole time.
