Sunday afternoon, at about 1:30 CDT, I broke my right ankle. (I was walking across a grassy slope--or possibly knoll--and my right foot slid out from under me sharply to the left.)

The rest of Sunday was eaten by the ER.

I broke both ankle bones, so surgery is required to stabilize the joint by means of a plate and three, or possibly four, screws.

Today was the pre-op consult with the Orthopedic Surgery Department, and tomorrow, if all goes well, will be the surgery. At the moment I'm stoned on Tylenol 3 and have my foot strapped into something that looks like what would happen if Monty Python's Spanish Inquisition got together with the Teletubbies and went a little nuts. But it's keeping my leg elevated and immobile, so go team us.

(Also, thank god for my husband's health insurance.)

Regular service will resume eventually, but don't expect it any time soon.

ETA: Forgot this bit: After surgery, I'm looking at six weeks in a cast, then a month in one of those walking cast boot things, then an ankle brace and PT.

Ack. I am very sorry.

My great-grandmother did this in a graveyard and did not hear the end of "mother/grandma/great-grandma falling into the hole in the graveyard" references in her lifetime. But we were really very sorry she broke it and mostly trying to make a joke out of relief that it wasn't worse.

If someone in the family isn't being a wise-ass about The Bad Thing That Happened, it means they don't care. At least, that's how it feels in my family. =)

Also, poor grandma, on several levels.

Oh sweetie. Ow ow ow. I'm so sorry.

I broke my ankle years ago in a very similar way and oh, oh, oh, do I empathize.

Heal quickly and brilliantly and beautifully, and may the surgery be completely uneventful.

Ack! I hope the surgery goes smoothly, the ankle heals as quickly as possible, and the pain killers make it all at least somewhat more bearable.

My best friend did this - in a wet, but not icy parking lot. Keep on top of the additional surgeries when they are recommended.

(My friend had a particularly fraught experience with her ankle. She was in a funeral home parking lot. She's a minister. The person who was there who knew who she was and had to make a bunch of calls to find her husband etc was a widower of two days. She was there to meet with to plan the service.)

My sympathies! I did something similar nearly eight years ago. I have a plate and five screws holding my ankle together. Good luck with the surgery!

Dear! I did the nearly exact same thing about 3 years. I think the week after surgery was the worst - after that it's just mostly sucky. When they tell you you can start pulling your toes back with a towel to keep your achilles stretched - DO IT! Like crazy - I thought I was but apparently I was being very wimpy about it and so my foot was very against being under my control when I could finally walk.

I had the plate on the small bone and the large bone broke at the ball so that part had to be screwed back on.

I didn't think it would ever be *good* again - but it really is.
