I have a complete revised draft of The Goblin Emperor . . . 20,000 words over budget.

This is what one might call a mixed blessing.

As a fellow writer, I sympathize and make hollow laughing sounds in solidarity.

As a reader, I WANT ALL THE WORDS, ALLLLL, and view publishers who impose word counts as impediments to my major goal.

Nothing is an unmixed blessing. I focus on the words "complete draft" and send a heartfelt YAY.

Well, personally, I can't see this as a bad thing! *tries to figure out why an publisher would think it's bad thing either?*

Sympathies.

Sympathies. <Avoids looking at the 165K first draft...> If you end up cutting bits here and there, save and share the outtakes with your loyal fans? We'll enjoy them, and that way they don't just vanish from existance.

Seconded! I loved the deleted scenes from DoL, both because more Felix, Mildmay et al. = always yay! and because of what they showed about the writing process.
