Mateusz Skutnik has released Submachine 9. I am beside myself with glee.

(If you want more Submachine, the entire series is here.)

Gandalf checks his email. BEST PHOTO EVAR.

I believe Catzilla turned off the little Cthulhu machine this morning by walking on it. Proof (a) that the people who designed the damn thing have never lived with a cat and (b) that my cat is THE SPAWN OF THE DEVIL.

I had not known about EarlyWord until it was drawn to my attention that The Goblin Emperor got a nice shout-out on their GalleyChat summary for March 4.

There's also a very positive review from Justin Landon at Staffer's Book Review, who admits he went in prepared to hate the book and was won over anyway. I think that's the first time I've pulled that trick off.

(I know if you're reading this blog, you probably don't need to be persuaded to buy the book. Humor me.)

I finally have a day job that is both permanent and part-time (instead of working as a full-time temp, which is what I've been doing the past two and a half years). I am very happy with it; it has taught me that, oddly enough, I enjoy accounting, which is a piece of self-knowledge I wish I'd had in college. It satisfies the same part of my brain that likes Latin and calculus (and Submachine, come to think of it). And I totally get an endorphin cookie when my numbers balance.

Also, if anyone knows any good resources for DIY double-entry bookkeeping, please share! I took a Continuing Education Accounting Intro course, but the textbook, as it turned out, was not very reliable. And my employer is unlikely to be able to spring for accounting software any time soon, so it's just me and Excel.

I inherited a bunch of the accounting function at my day job and end up referring back to this a lot: http://www.dwmbeancounter.com/tutorial/DrCrTChart.html (and I probably ought to go through the entire tutorial associated with it. In my copious spare time).

In terms of double-entry accounting software, take a look at GnuCash before using Excel. It's not industrial strength, but it may be good enough.

When I took accounting at my local community college, we learned QuickBooks; I found the setup of that to be fairly intuitive. It's not super cheap (QuickBooks Pro is about $200) but it had all the basics and it worked.

My friend who is studying accounting says:
If she's using Excel only, she's going to need to make sure it's set up correctly and inserting accounting functions is going to be a high priority

If she's looking for a free program because the company doesn't have one yet, have her look at Quickbooks online because I think it's either free or has a nominal fee for the use. There's also Peachtree Accounting, Account Edge 2010, Freshbooks, and Outright.

My friend has taken classes for Peachtree and Quickbooks so if you end up using one of them I can pass queries on. I notice [livejournal.com profile] uneasy_spirit posted Quickbooks Pro is expensive. I'm not sure if there's a free version and a fancier pro version or what's up with that. It's possible my friend got a cheap version of Quickbooks through her college or something but if there's a possibility of a free version it's good to check into.

You can also check www.tucows.com/downloads (http://www.tucows.com/downloads) for accounting freeware. A computer tech friend of mine recommended tucows to me a long time ago for finding freeware and shareware programs and I've found several useful free download programs there. I just searched the freeware section for the keyword accounting and got 64 results. Skimming the list at least some of them say they can be used for businesses.

Oh, and my friend adds that she's pretty decent with Excel and if you have any questions about that I can give you her contact info.
