ME: Underfoot Cat, what are you doing?
UNDERFOOT CAT: I'm singin' in the rain, just singin'--
ME: Try again.
U.C.: Um. Your socks were lonely?
ME: My dirty and undoubtedly reeking socks that I just took off my feet after coming back from the barn?
U.C.: Yup! They're awesome!
ME: From the way you're treating them, you'd think I've been walking through the catnip mines.
U.C.: Um. I like horses?
ME: Have you ever seen a horse?
U.C.: . . . Maybe.
[UNDERFOOT CAT rubs his face lovingly against my argyle socks]
ME: You do realize this is not normal, don't you?
U.C.: It's not my fault! I was found up a tree! *
ME: Where all the horses wore argyle socks?
U.C.: It was an awesome tree.

*True.

Formerly Feral Fionavar (aka Finnsie, Finn, The Finn) has a similar obsession... but with only one pair of shoes, my oldest pair of Keen sandals.

Cats. IDEK.

I have had cats do the same thing with raw unwashed fresh-off-the-sheep fleece. We'd done a large group order of fleece to save on shipping, so there was...a ridiculous amount of Icelandic fleece on my doorstep at one point. Something like 40 lbs. Anyway...

*sees fleece shipping boxes on doorstep (which is right on the driveway)
*goes and finds emails from friends with amounts of fleece
*draws up list
*retrieves kitchen scale and many paper bags from kitchen
*opens boxes on driveway
*separates out my share of fleece
*takes my share of fleece inside and puts it on the living room floor, for eventual relocation to the craft room
*goes back outside and separates out the rest of the fleece per the list
*puts all the bags in the car for delivery
*goes back in the house
*discovers both cats buried in the fleece on the living room floor, writhing about in purring ecstasy

Fictitious Kitty (the shy one) also likes certain socks. And nylon straps, particularly when attached to things like backpacks.

I now have a mental picture of horses wearing argyle socks, and will have a perfect day because of it. Thanks!

My cat does this with my boyfriend's t-shirts, but only after he's worn them. We've never been able to figure out why. It's like what happens to the other cat on catnip.
