I was going to write a nice contemplative post about my various projects and what I need to be doing and maybe even why I'm not actually doing it ... when I remembered that my editor had said something about an author photo.

Went back in my email, found the relevant message, and yes, yes, indeed. Ace wants a photo and I made some blithe promise (back in July) of getting one by mid-September.

::looks at date::
::flips out::

The problem is that I haven't had any serious photographs taken of me since my wedding, and I look nothing like myself in those photos since I'm (a.) wearing a lacy off-the-shoulder dress and (b.) not wearing my glasses. (Also (c.) there are flowers in my hair.) [livejournal.com profile] dd_b took some lovely pictures last year, but those are really about [livejournal.com profile] elisem's necklaces, not me. (Again, I'm not wearing my glasses, and [livejournal.com profile] papersky has professed the belief that it's actually a waxwork of me.) And my other options are bad candid photos (I don't photograph well), with or without cats.

So I have to find a photographer. And one who will understand wanting a portrait without wanting a "glamor shot." And who will not try to convince me to take my glasses off. And who can do this damn thing soon.

Aieeeeeeee.

I think you should use one of the photos of you with Elise's jewelry. For one thing, if you're shy about pictures, everyone will remember the jewelry. If you can say something, anything, about the jewelry, think of the advertising for Elise! That is, if any of the photos actually show your face rather than just your neck ;-)

I don't know, I can see the appeal of having an author photo that did not show one's face. In an ideal world they'd allow you to pick one of your userpics; failing that, there's always the option of trying to persuade them to accept a baby photo.

I'll second this.

Look, it doesn't matter if it's a waxwork, it's very beautiful, and it's not as if people buy the book because the author's animated in the photograph.

I have no author photo. I was asked if I wanted one and I said no. I'm very averse to photographs generally.

I thought the jewelry ones were nice.

If you don't want a studio photo, maybe one of those little booths? Well, maybe not.

It does occur to me that taking on a female 'nym (as I'm contemplating for genre reasons) would excuse the necessity of an author photo, if only for those books. A positive side to consider.

I once read a book where an author disguised her identity by hiding behind a large, fluffy cat in her author's photo.
