So a bunch of people have added me to their reading lists recently, and I thought I ought to stand up and make the ObSpeech:

I probably won't add you back, and that's nothing personal. It's a reluctantly accepted fact about my relationship with the internet--if I don't keep my reading list parsimoniously small, it will eat my life. But the fact that I probably won't add you back doesn't mean I don't know you're there. I check this handy little gizmo fairly regularly, and always click through to find out about the new names. Because it's not that I'm not interested. So, yeah. I know you're there, and I'm glad you're reading, and if you want to comment on my entires, please do.

And if you want to comment on this entry to introduce yourself or ask a question (and this also goes for people who aren't new readers *g*), go for it. No obligation; lurkers are lovely, too.

Thought I'd thank you for the gizmo link which is enough to either make one happy, or induce paranoia. Glad to see that you're kind to lurkers (I am one professionally on lJ) and believe me I understand that the net can swallow your life when you're not looking.

If you were to friend me (and that's not a hint ;-) you'd find more than the occaisonal post about theatrical plays on in London, occasional short or long-winded thoughts about books I'm reading and nestled in there various pieces of fanfic that needed a home. Feel free to ignore those - they're the dark side of my creativity and I only let them flourish in the damp, dark space that is 'memories' - though LJ being what it is, I realise those pieces are sometimes under floodlights. LJ-Cut is my friend.

Why am I reading your LJ? Got here from someone else I found interesting, liked your thoughts on writing. Am impressed you wrote a novel *while* doing your PhD.

Will safely return to lurking status now.

Hiya! No need to reciprofriend me, which is a good thing, apparently :). Saw a writing-related post of yours being discussed by some LJ-posting writer or another, read it, liked it, decided to see what else you have to say :)

Ditto that -- an awesome post about the travails of being a short-story writer. No need to friend me back.

[identity profile] orangemike.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I do book reviews (never got a copy of your book; blame your publisher). A number of writers I respect had spoken well of you, and you appear sometimes in interesting discussions, saying interesting things. Why wouldn't I want to read your lj?

[identity profile] dakiwiboid.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
My reasons are much the same as [livejournal.com profile] orangemike's, save for the book reviews. I'm a writer myself, and I also keep seeing you on the friends lists of mutual friends who are writers. Most of my writing these days, alas, is in the food line, rather than the fiction one. One of these days, I'll get back to my novel, rather than just getting my apartment unpacked and boiling the pot.

Well, I've been reading you for quite some time and can't remember if I introduced myself at first, or how I found you. But enjoy your writing quite a bit.

I'm a retired community college English teacher, now trying to write fantasy and mystery novels while traveling from one place to another, mostly in the Southeast of US, Chicago, and SF Bay Area. Sometimes political (on the left), sometimes a media fan (most of all, Joss Whedon), and most of all, a reader.

Thanks for being open to all.

I'm here because I saw that had mad posts about the Lord Peter Wimsey series, and I'm also in the midst of reading your book.

Saw your book recommended in a friends LJ, and linked out of curiosity. Even ordred the book, though amazon is taking its own sweet time about delivering. And no worries on linking back, I have absolutely nothing of interest to say in my LJ :D

What jdparadise said. I read something of yours linked by EBear -- no need to reciprofriend (a great term!).

Hi. *waves* I found you through Bear. *back to lurkville*

[identity profile] iagor.livejournal.com 2005-09-27 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi, I found you originally through Jack while trying to click through the other authors he represented. I was trying to see what the websites looked like, since my own was not going well. The second time was through someone's LJ, I don't recall whose. Since everyone is saying Bear, I'll say Bear too. :follows the crowd off the cliff: Wheeee!

Hi! I recently asked all my friends if they could recommend some of their friends worth reading. Papersky recommended you, and here I am!

I finished Melusine this weekend. I liked -- quite a bit. Finishing the last third displaced half an afternoon of writing. That said, I agree with the frequent comment that there's some structural wonkiness in at the start: Felix's downfall happens a little to quickly, and we only hazily get a sense of what he's lost; and until Mildmay catches up, there's a handful of Felix sections with almost identical emotional arcs, all ending with him crashing yet further into madness. And I think Ace did seriously misstepped in not packaging this as the first half of the story -- without that knowledge, the ending is only halfway satisfying.

Which are minor nits compared to what you did right. Especially that worldbuilding, and the levels of society.

Hi! Like several others, I found you via your D. L. Sayers posts. I've stayed for the posts about dissertation-writing (my current challenge), literature, and all kinds of intelligent and amusing thoughts. Your flist is addictive too. I very much enjoyed Mélusine, which I bought in Sydney, Australia in August; it was prominently displayed among the SF/F New Releases in a big city bookshop. Congratulations on sending off The Virtu. Returning to lurk mode now.

I'm trying to be a writer, and followed links from [livejournal.com profile] matociquala's LJ, found your posts intriguing and educational. Voila!

And thank you for sharing your knowledge!

...back to lurking...

[livejournal.com profile] llygoden told me you existed and I like reading you.
