In case you were wondering, I am still revising The Mirador. My editor, who is merciful, gave me an extension. (A thing I never had to ask for in my career as a student, and am I having over-achiever guilt about it? Three guesses and the first two don't count.) I've caught several embarrassing continuity glitches, rewritten several bad segues, and cut several clunky paragraphs.

I'm also so bored I can't stand myself.

If you'd like to tell me something good, something interesting, something fun or funny or even peculiar, I would be very grateful.

In related news, I am writing a paper on Hamlet and King Lear! That is not so much interesting or funny as peculiar. (My professor said we could have the run of the whole semester. I could have written about Twelfth Night! Instead I was like, Hm, the tragedies, we didn't talk about them much in class!)

I am getting my exclamation marks in this LJ comment because in two seconds it's back to the somber punctuation appropriate for discussing female subjugation! The men in these plays are such dicks. Oh, man, patriarchy!

I had read Melusine (I'm too lazy to find the keyboard command for the accent mark) and The Virtu a month or two ago and then loaned them to a friend of mine. (I provide 90% of her fantasy reading. Any book that I really like I pass on to her.) She finished them last night and greeted me today with a huge flying hug. She loved the books.

You know meerkats? cute things, aren't they?

Dominant female meerkats will kill the cubs of lower-status females. Then they'll harass and bully the females until they become infertile because of stress. The subordinate females will avoid the dominant females as much as they can, but when the dominant female has her cubs? They'll come back and help look after them - that whole babysitting thing meerkats are so famous for.

Brown hyenas will sometimes adopt the cubs of killed or MIA other hyenas. Spotted hyenas eat the whole animal, up to and including crunching and sawllowing the bones, which is why their crap is whitish.

Hyenas are extremely cool, and so much better than lions. Lions just have really good PR.

My family's good for crazy stories, though. You sound like you could use one.

My grandparents live right next door to a nursing home. They (my grandparents) have been growing a kind of bamboo fence around their yard since before I was born. From about the same time, the folks at the home have been calling the cops on 'em, claiming that Grandpa's growing marijuana.

So, this war's been going on for over two decades now, and my Grandpa's finally gotten fed up with them. What does he do?

He gets out his collection of dormant bumblebees and sticks 'em all in the nursing home's yard. Last I heard, he's still waiting for the outraged phone call.

I don't know if that counts as funny, but it sure is strange, and I swear to God it's true.

Paddy's been a good boy lately, so he goes to God and he goes, "God, I been a good boy lately, how about you let me win the lottery?"

So God thinks it over like a good thoughtful God does, and he agrees, Paddy's been less troublesome lately, sure doesn't he deserve a bit of a reward? So he nods and off Paddy goes, planning what he's going to do with his winnings.

However, Lottery Day cmes and goes, and then Paddy shows up at God's joint again, pissed off as all get out. "Hey, God, you said I could win the lottery! I didn't win! What happened?"

You know God's god, becuase he didn't take the pool cue he'd just lined up a beautiful shot with and smack the fool right then and there. "Jaysus Feckin' Christ, Paddy, you got to at least give me a little hand, you know? Could you at least buy the feckin' ticket?"

Something interesting? Today I paid a Salvation Army man $10 to NOT ring his bell. He was IN Target shaking that thing, it had to be stopped! So our deal was $10 for him to not ring until I left. The moment I left, however, the ringing began again, and I heard it all the way until I reached my car.

I always find books (http://rushthatspeaks.livejournal.com/226414.html?nc=10&style=mine) and food (http://fivemack.livejournal.com/76013.html) very cheering, and there's always the panda cam (http://www.sandiegozoo.org/zoo/ex_panda_station.html) -- and this book may be a learning experience but soon you'll be finished and it will be a book and I'm looking forward to it. We bought Melusine in paperback on Sunday. We spotted it in Chapter and decided that rysmiel needs a personal copy. You rock.

Here's something odd, and it reminds me that synchronicity can involve the
wondrously whimsical...

A colleague of mine and a friend of mine independently and at different times broached the subject of underpants and why men leave well...marks in them after they went to room 101. Also a certain aspect of the anatomy involving the subject followed. I didn't instigate it, mind! And, again independently, the two of them (and not being acquainted with each other) have developed a recent fondness of Elvis. The Omniverse works in mysterious ways.

I read Melusine and just today finished The Virtu. Ye gods, I need more!
Ah, maybe someday I'll sit down and write a review, but for now: mesmerising, brilliant and well-written. So there.
