It's 3 A.M. I have insomnia. And there is a centipede on the wall of the study--behind me--up by the ceiling where neither the Second Ninja nor I can possibly reach it.

The damn thing is lurking at me.

ETA WARNING: Major spoilers for The Mirador in the comments.

Oh, YUK!!! That would instantly make me VERY sleepless, if I wasn't already...

Well, we just had a little earthquake out here in SoCal... which is also very bad for sleep-making... Oh, well. Actually... I think I prefer that to a lurking centipede!!! *shudder*

If the centipede is still roaming the wall high up, it probably has insomnia too. Centipedes usually stick closer to the ground. There are a couple of things you can try to get it down so that you or the cat can deal with it. First, if you have a squirt bottle of some non-toxic (to cats) liquid, you can try standing on a secure chair (or whatever) and squirt it down. If all else fails (and depending on your wall coverings), you can use a straw filled with water to squirt it down. The advantage of either of these methods, is that the centipede will be wet and easier to deal with. This method works for all bugs, except for wasps, etc., which it just angers. At least the process passes the time and entertains the cat(s).

It's times like that, that I contemplate buying something out of the _Sky Mall_ catalogue, namely the bug-vacuum-onna-stick. Because, *really*.

Hee Hee Hee Hee Hee. I love "
The damn thing is lurking at me.
" I mean I know it isn't funny late at night that the bastard is hiding out of reach of your disposal critters, but I thought that I was the only one who used lurking to mean standing right out in the open being both obvious and threatening. ('cause who is scarier? someone who feels the need to hide in corners to threaten you or someone who feels adequately threatening in a well lit area on a busy street?)

I keep telling people this domestic surveillance program has gone too far. Now, even the bugs are watching us...

worse yet, they are zombie bugs -- because everyone knows you can't really kill a centipede. The last time the cats got one it crawled off in 3 different directions (bleaggh!). [Note: They are no longer allowed to hunt centipedes]

You and [livejournal.com profile] ursulav. Where is it you live that is afflicted with centipedes, so I know to never ever move there?

And I virtuously went to my local brick-an concrete-and-plaster bookstore last weekend and told them to order The Mirador for me, and also to stock all the books by this Sarah Monette author because they are Cool and will Sell.

But now I have to wait for them to actually get it. Amazon is laughing at me out of the corner of my browser.

There's a reason the good Lord created missile weapons, y'know. A trebuchet is overkill, especially indoors, but an airgun with soft rounds would fit the bill nicely.

"I see it lurking at me...[phutphutphutphut]... guess that settles your hash, vile arthropod!"

I didn't sleep last night reading The Mirador. It was 2000% worth it except that I have no idea how I can wait until the next book comes out.

Ew. Centipedes. My cat would be all over that.

I've just finished The Mirador and it was lovely, in wholly unexpected ways. I didn't expect to enjoy Mehitabel's narrative so much, or to like Shannon and Stephen, or to be so sorry about Gideon's death.

And, as much as I love Felix (and I do!), I've always sort of wondered why Mildmay put up with him, whether it was just his desire for a family, or Stockholm Syndrome, or something else entirely. I was glad to get a look at what his motivations actually were, and relieved that they made so much sense.

If I had to complain about anything, it would be that there does seem to be a shortage of Felix in this book: that there are quite large sections, particularly in the last two parts, where I was surprised not to see more of his point of view.

But overall I thought it was a gorgeous book, and beautifully written (as always) and entirely designed to make waiting for the fourth part as painful as possible. Thank you for writing!

I love the books, too, especially The Virtu, so I ran out and got The Mirador immediately. I love the characters and story, but I was so, so, SO upset over Gideon's death that I'm almost not sure what to do with myself. Obviously I will read the next book, because I love this series, but I do feel somewhat betrayed. Though I think that's probably the point. He was one of the few stable-seeming characters and I loved him and Felix together, and because I get extremely invested in the characters I respect, I took his murder really hard. Still a great book, though -- just made me cry.

Well, I just picked up my copy of the Mirador. And while I didn't expect to like Mehitabel portion, I was glad because it provided some relief from the endless angst of Mildmay and Felix. It also provided some insight to Shannon and Stephen.

I have my suspicion as to who else was involved in the murder of one of the central characters but I won't say.

I was actually hoping Felix and Mildmay's relationship would resolve in this book; but I can't wait for the next book. Despite the fact that they're brothers, I can't see Felix 'giving' himself to anyone other than Mildmay or vice versa. Both have significant trust issues that get in the way of 'normal' relationships.

Anyway, I enjoyed Mirador and hope to see the next book out soon.
