Sometimes I despair of myself.

You know, I do this every goddamn time. I go to update my website, get all the files in shape, open Filezilla . . . and cannot find the index card that has the server's IP address on it. It's Somewhere On My Desk.

It finally occurred to me, in the middle of today's as-yet fruitless search, that it would be really smart to put that index card somewhere else. Not Somewhere Safe, as that's a completely separate category of disaster, but somewhere I can find the damn thing. And if I can drag it out of the primal chaos one more time, maybe that'll actually happen.

Maybe.

Who decided my brain should be running the show? Honestly.

A smart tip I saw recently: when you're looking for something and find it, put it away in the first place you looked for it. That's where it best belongs. Though, too, with something as replicable as a server IP address duplicating the information in several places seems wise, too: send it to yourself in e-mail, if you have gmail, and it will always be searchable, stick it on your phone/pda in notes, and make multiple index cards so you have one to leave in the card file and one to forget on the desktop. (Based on my sweetie's rule of umbrellas. You need three: one to forget at home, one to forget at work, and one to forget in the car.)

Can you put it in your electronic address book, filed under (website) IP address, or some name you'll remember? Or, make a sticky note with it on your desktop (I know, that way lies madness).

I have an ancient but reliable FTP client I use to move files, and it has its own address book that remembers the server's IP address for me. In fact, I have to remember to write it down so I don't have to re-find it when I update software...eek.

I generally file that sort of information on a thumb drive, and as well, I keep it in hard copy with passwords/etc in my backpack. I'm rather disorganized by nature, so I can usually never find it anyway.

At the risk of being smacked, I'm wondering if you couldn't just edit your hosts file. Put the IP address in and map a domain name to it. Then it's always there -- but only on your system.

Do you not use Filezilla's Site Manager? (Ctrl-S, or under File Menu--Site Manager) ?

I'm pretty sure I taught my info to FileZilla; but it also has an option to "reconnect", and that's what I used last time. (Ctrl-R, or Server/Reconnect.)

I wound up writing important information (in this case, my network security keys) in the inside leaf of the manual for the router. I can find *that* because it's a book, and I know where the book is.

I use my label-maker and make a label, sticking it to whatever the issue is--my mobile phone, for example, has a label with my number on it because I never can remember the darned thing.

I save that sort of mess in Notepad *shrugs*

And on top of it, I save it to 'My Documents' lol, I learned this lesson ages ago. I lost 2 layouts before I realized I'd better not keep 'em in esoteric places :P

The low tech option would be to write it out on a sliver of paper, and then tape said sliver to the monitor frame, above or below the screen. This might also occasionally jog your memory about updating the website - if you think that might be helpful.

Is there some reason you can't put it in a text file in directory tree with the local copy of the website? Maybe in the directory name that's the parent of the whole thing?
