So, yeah, I'm gonna be at Sasquan. If you want to find me, here are the places and times to look.

Standard disclaimer: I am both very shy and very near-sighted.

Demigods, Chosen Ones & Rightful Heirs: Can Progress, Merit & Citizens Ever Matter in Fantasy?
Saturday 16:00 - 16:45, 300A (CC)
Science fiction often centers around meritocracies (or at least "knowledgetocracies") but fantasy? Not so much. Or, as Dennis famously said in Monty Python and the Holy Grail: "…Strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony." Has fantasy ever overcome this classic trope? Can it?

And then the Hugos. Eep.

Harlan Ellison feels he has suffered enough (scroll down to Mr. Ellison's entry at Thursday, August 31 2006 21:21:38).

Cogratulations to John Scalzi, winner of this year's Campbell.

Congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] davidlevine on his Hugo for "Tk'tk'tk."

And to all the other Hugo winners, but David and John are the two I personally know and hugged.

(And, no, I am not linking to Kathryn Cramer's photographs of me, because lo I am antiphotogenic. Also with the true demonic nature showing in my beady red eyes.)

My contributor's copies of Tales of the Unanticipated 27 arrived, and "Katabasis: Seraphic Trains" is the lead-off man.

Also, two sales: "Amante Dorée" (the alternate history transsexual story) to Paradox and "Letter from a Teddy Bear on Veterans' Day" to Ideomancer. The Nov/Dec issue of Fantasy will have a new Kyle Murchison Booth story, "Thirdhop Scarp," in it. I understand there will be an interview with yrs trly as well. Also, sold "Three Letters from the Queen of Elfland" for a Czech anthology--my first foreign rights sale!

ETA: And The Bone Key has an Amazon listing.

ETA(2): And have I remembered to mention that "Why Do You Linger?" has sold to Subterranean?

ETA(3): My contributor's copy of The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror 19 was just deposited on my porch by the excellent postal ninjas.

w00t! all 'round.

Happily, this process doesn't take me long.

I've posted my Worldcon schedule here. I am, as I have said before, both shy and extremely myopic, and although I'm quite good with faces, I'm not so much with names. So, you know, unless I'm obviously in conversation with somebody, please don't feel any gêne about coming up and introducing (or re-introducing) yourself.

Just be patient with me.

If the concom changes the scedule, obviously this'll be wrong.

It's raining today, very hard and very straight up and down, and it is very clear from the evidence of the mail that my postal carrier was caught out in it.

So, of course, today is the day my Campbell nomination certificate arrived.

I had to peel it out of the envelope, like peeling a very soggy banana.

Fortunately, between the outer envelope, the cover letter, the inner envelope, and the backing cardboard, the certificate itself1 is a little warped and water-blistered, but actually dry. And the ink didn't run.

1Which is prettier and less Scroogish2 than my Ph.D. diploma.

2In the manner of Ebenezer Scrooge, pre attitude transplant. My diploma is like the ring from a Las Vegas wedding, where the gold comes off after a week and it turns your finger green.3

3I've been infected by the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest's results for 2006.4

4Curses upon Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] matociquala for the link.5

5Okay, I'm done now.

Well, I've booked my plane tickets (and the airport shuttle), found a room, and filled out the programming questionnaire. I guess it's official. I'm going to WorldCon.

(eee! I must be out of my mind! eee!)
